This is a painting that's been ripening to maturity in my studio. I thought I had finished it a few month ago but knew it wasn't quite right. I had portrayed the bowl of pears sitting on a cloth whose angles set up strong diagonals. I liked the movement this composition provided but set the painting aside. I kept glancing at it, wondering what was unsettling. Eventually I saw that the diagonals tended to make the circle of the bowl spin around (...making me fear being clunked on the head by flying pears! oh, not really.) So I re-painted the background with a table top to establish a calming horizontal line that is repeated by the top and bottom edges of the canvas. Now my three pears are ready for their debut.
