I enjoyed incorporating Matisse's painting of dancers into this still life of a rose. The movement of the figures seems to work well with the bowl and flower.

Autumn, 20" x 16", oil on canvas
$495 plus $20 insurance/shipping  SOLD to a collector in Virginia

I love the process of drawing so here I drew over the brushed oil paint with oil pastels. It's a very messy process but exciting. When I first posted this painting the woman was sitting beside what appeared to be a large fireplace. The window makes a bit more 'sense' - whatever that might be within an imagined world.

The colors were a struggle on this one but now they work well to suggest a sizzling summer day. Time to slather on the sun lotion.

Here's a second version of an earlier painting. I always loved the pose but could get the other elements of color, detail and composition to work. Now she has weight and really seems to asleep.

The dark background over which I created the figure suggested night, so here she is at the beach as the sun sets - or the moon rises.

This painting reveals that I do indeed love color. It's fun to alternate between brightly colorful and almost monochromatic paintings. Each creates its own mood.

This image was used by Viridian Nutrition in the UK to promote a new line of vitamins for women!

In the first version of this painting, posted months ago, the background was simply an ocean extending back to the horizon line. Although I liked the figure, dock and slightly out-of-perspective red towel, something about the composition unsettled me. The woman is obviously the subject matter of this painting but the empty background somehow diminished her importance. I was pleased to find that by intensifying the color of the water and adding a far shore and red sailboat, she popped to life. And there's now a hint of story.

Reverie, figurative acrylic painting, woman, moon, contemporary figurative art, figuration, modern figure painter

Reverie, acrylic on canvas, 24" x 30"
SOLD to a collector in Connecticut
Email: marie@mariefox.com (Click image to make larger)

There are about six versions underneath the current painting. The woman lounging in her chair was always present, as were the moon and water. But the arms and legs have assumed various poses over time and the background rearranged itself and the colors shifted. Finally I'm happy with the pose and mood. The scene is no longer cute (moon peeking in window) - which had been the main source of my dissatisfaction.

Here is the theme I'm often drawn to of women, a beach, an ocean and sailboats. I like the bigness of this woman who seems to be dreaming of sailing.

This is the first of some small drawings/paintings on watercolor paper using various media including pencil, ink, pastel and acrylic which has been fixed with acrylic spray varnish. The size is odd because I just started drawing on a slightly bluish paper. This one was really fun.

Day To Herself, acrylic on canvas, 20" x 20"
SOLD to a collector in CanadaEmail: marie@mariefox.com (Click image to make larger)

I can never predict which emotions a painted face will reveal, what it's expression will be. This woman seemed in a contemplative mood so the story I imagined was that she had rowed to a secret spot of sand to find some solitude.

Snapshot, contemporary figurative painter, modern figure painting, woman, girl in pearls

Snapshot, 24" x 18", acrylic on canvas. Not for sale.
Email: marie@mariefox.com (Click image to make larger)

This seems the perfect post for Memorial Day - about 1952. A girl, all prettied up with her pearls, smiles for the camera in her neat backyard. Actually I love the shapes and colors of this painting, as well as the slightly folk art feel. This one always gives me a smile - perhaps because she is so very pleased with herself.

The Bracelet, contemporary figure painters, modern figurative painting, woman, beach,

The Bracelet, 20" x 20", acrylic on canvas SOLD
Email: marie@mariefox.com (Click image to make larger)

When typing in the painting's title just now, I wrote "Red Sails" - which was the name about three versions ago. I'm always amazed at the changes I make after the painting is done. On the right horizon, I replaced three small boats with a single large sailboat with red sails. Then I added the island to the left, then removed the boat. But this woman sitting at the beach does have a new bracelet.

A Good Book, modern figurative painting, contemporary figure painters, woman, beach

A Good Book, 20" x 20",SOLD to a collector in Hawaii
Email: marie@mariefox.com (Click image to make larger)

In the earlier version of this painting, a large potted plant occupied the space to the left of the figure. I loved the woman but the plant crowded her and and even seemed threatening. It took a while for me to realize that I was uncomfortable - as was she. The new setting is peaceful and spacious, giving focus to the figure. As my friend and collector Dan Levine said: the background is the unsung hero.

Often I find it difficult to release (sell) paintings just after I've painted them. I want them to hang around (literally) for a while so I can learn from them. What will each painting tell me about its color combination, composition, 'style', subject matter or something more elusive. It's usually this last bit that I'm after. Did I surprise myself in some way, did I create beautiful marks by accident? It's a treasure hunt. Otherwise, why do it?

I used the same model as for the earlier "The Mirror" painting because I love the twists of the pose. This time she's full-length and larger overall. At first, the dress was short but when I lengthened it and added a black border, making it more elegant, a story emerged. She seemed to be preparing for a special occasion. I added a red flower for her hair, to bring the red of the floor up close to her face. With this, I knew she'd need an invitation to go dancing - perhaps somewhere in Spain. I really like this painting because I didn't go too far with the details. It has a slightly unfinished look that I find pleasing.

Island Girl, acrylic on canvas, 20" x 20"

The bend of the torso is what inspired me to use this pose. By making her suit turquoise she seemed to  become part of the ocean behind her. I really enjoyed painting this one because of the luscious colors and solid feel of the body. My favorite places are the straight arm with the bracelet and the fabric over her knees.

It's good to be painting again and I see that some bright colors have crept into my palette. This model was actually quite skinny but I find curves luscious and fun to paint.
