Email: marie@mariefox.com Thanks to a recent windstorm, I found this big lemon lying beneath a tree with its leaves still attached. In my studio I set it on a table against a wall, using pennies wedged underneath to keep it upright. (I love this little coin trick which I learned from Cezanne. Apparently that's how he kept his apples and oranges from rolling off the table.) I painted it larger than life. Changing the scale of an object seems to make me look at it in a new way.

Email: marie@mariefox.com Comment by email: "Your color combinations are wonderfully surprising. The blue-lavender and yellow seem to both pull at and push away from each other. I noticed that both have some of the color of the other reflected off their surfaces. It’s very effective. I paint too." Anita, York Harbor

It's fun to look at this scene and remember so clearly the act of painting it. I was standing close to the Wild Flower Bakery in Freestone (near Sebastapol in Sonoma County), looking across the street. I really loved the basic shapes of the barn and silo, and the reddish color of the barn roof. It's a small painting but it seems to give a big sense of the farm buildings.
Oil on Canvas Board, 6" x 6" - SOLD Email: marie@mariefox.com This little painting celebrates my love for sewing. For many years I made a living by designing and fabricating hand-dyed silk clothing. I've also sewn a stack of quilts. Pulling thread through fabric has always given me comfort - because of its slow steady rhythm and its connection to the women who create both everyday and extraordinary art with needle and thread. Comments by email: "fun painting!" Jeannie "Your painting reminds us “girls” of our shared love for sewing. My mother makes needlepoint, my sister can make anything on the sewing machine and I quilt. Thank you." S. Hanson, KS

Oil on Canvas Board, 8" x 10" SOLDEmail: marie@mariefox.com In this little painting I was experimenting with angularity in the lines. I also used dark outlines instead of blocks of color to describe the contours of the fruit. I like the colors here - which are muted and an odd but pleasing combination - to my eye. Comments by email: "Thank you Marie! The painting is beautiful - I love it." Kath

Oil on Canvas, 11" x 14" - SOLDEmail: marie@mariefox.com Comments by email: "Being a painter myself I know the challenges you faced painting this composition. The folds of cloth, the curved reflective surface of the vase, the gauziness of the rose petals, and the geometric surfaces of the lime each require a different turning of the eye to capture on canvas. Bravo! Bravo!!" Benjamin Burr, Charlestown, SC
Oil on Canvas Board, 8" x 10" $690 - SOLDEmail: marie@mariefox.com This painting is an odd combination of objects, but was a joy to paint. I loved looking closely at the folds of the paper and the intricate pattern on the silver spoon. The reddish background is an overall layer I applied long before starting the painting. I liked the reddish glow so did not paint over it other than where the objects are. I've always like this little painting.

This is a painting I've always loved because of the colors, the glass jar and the scarf which has a Matisse design on the silk. I'd found the jar long ago at a flea market and always liked the square shape and the gray metal lid. All the angles made it difficult to paint but it was great to discover areas where the scarf colors were reflected. That's the lesson that painting anything made of glass always provides - you really have to look. There's no guessing what will be reflected or seen through the glass.

Oil on Canvas, 24" x 20" - SOLD Email: marie@mariefox.com Comments by email" "Like most New Yorkers, I have a lot to say about a lot of things. I am impressed by your composition, in this particular piece and in many of your other paintings. Do you have a representative here? I’m asking because while I visit galleries on a regular basis most of what I see would be better suited for a trash can rather than a wall. I will check back on a regular basis to see what you have been working on." Bill Windham, NYC
