This painting started as a drawing - a study in composition and values. Usually I just begin painting, hoping the lights and darks will work themselves out in a pleasing and balanced way. I've been drawing a lot recently so I decided to work out this composition in pencil before starting the painting. I found it difficult to maintain control of the values because color kept seducing me to pay more attention to it. But I managed to stick to my original value drawing and am happy with this effort. As always, I love painting the female form and telling a tale about the imagined woman. Like me, this one loves her necklaces! (The actual colors in the painting (versus online) are: leotard is dark purple, mirror is dark turqoiuse-blue, bedding is light turqoiuse blue-gray, her hair orange-red.
This is beautiful, Marie! Love it, love it, love it!

You've created another interesting story here with this intriguing woman in front of the mirror. The thought of the small necklace in relation to her whole self, as the focus of her attention, brings a smile.
ReplyDeleteYour passion for painting women sines through the work, Marie. These are 'Hopper' like but in a richer and more detailed way.
ReplyDeleteJust masterful.
