This paper had a note on it to remind me to do something. I had anchored it on the kitchen counter with a lemon. Returning to the kitchen, I suddenly saw a perfect little still life scene, so I whipped out a pencil and second piece of paper to do a sketch. In the studio it took a while to re-create the original scene...but I really loved painting this one.

It's natural for me to want to paint the objects within my vision every day - and that includes my art materials. The tools of my trade are my treasures. I love my pastels although I don't use them much right now. There's something about their rainbow of colors and tubular shape that's intriguing.

Lemon & Slice

I'll always return to lemons as a subject because of their almost spherical shape and the contrast between the shiny textured skin and translucent wet interior.

I do love those lemons - the shape, the scent and the flavor. I'd bought a bag of them and rather than paint them as wedges, I decided to group three in one of my favorite bowls. My artistic challenge to myself was to make the lemons appear as intensely yellow as they are in life. So I tried to dull the other colors and to use complements. This painting took quite a long while and I'm growing to like it.

Three Olives
Oil on Canvas Board - 6" x 6", framed - SOLD
I've always been wild about olives. Absolutely love that salty taste. So when I spied a jar of these big ones in the fridge, I knew three would become my models. The hot studio light stirred up their delisious scent. In this little painting I went for unusual colors - for me. Two different greens, and I think I like them.

I've always loved the shiny surface, tubular shape and circular handles of these clips that artists use to attach drawing paper to a board. They have a powerful grip and a nice snap when they lock into place. Mostly they remind me of wonderfully long drawing sessions, some of my favorite times.
