This painting really works for me in that it's angular, has minimal colors and the face is slightly abstract. It seems that she is between activities or thoughts, wholly comfortable in the moment.

An actress reviews her lines between scenes at the theater. After I roughed in the figure, I added some shapes in the background which came to suggest theater props. So her dress became a costume and a script appeared in her hand.

One lesson I learned from the fabulous Matisse exhibit I saw in NYC a few years ago is to use a pose more than once. On display were multiple versions of a single pose done as drawings and paintings. I decided to try this with the girl in my Diving Board painting.
