I started by drawing in the figure with a deep purple color and eventually added blues, red and cream to describe the flesh. So there's a bit of all these colors still present. I wanted to create some interesting grays. As my artist friend Raymond Logan says: "Gray is your friend". Check out how he dazzles the eye with his clever use of grays, and warm/cool combinations.

Beautiful. These paintings of women have such personality and mood.
Gray makes color sing. Carol Marine is the queen of gray and I have just taken my second workshop with her. I think I'm getting it, finally ;)
She is a wonderful teacher and friend.

Lovely composition and confident paint handling. Love that intense orangey red around her head but the strong lines of the legs help to move the eye down again.

Your technique in the Doorway, and the way you described how you used color in accomplishing it really strikes a chord with me. It makes me yearn to see one of your figure studies done from behind, like one of the mobile and fanciful figure studies done by the 19th Century painter Bougereau and others of that genre, with the power and angularity you are capable of and the wonderful abstract quality of your work.

I admire the reclining figures you have done lately, but long for more mobile figures. That is why I could not resist Blue Suit. The powerful angularity of the painting is stunning. In one sense, you have captured the essence of a coiled spring, with all the mobility that the description implies. Now that she lives here, I would never part with her!
