One of my favorite topics is the Three Muses, or Graces. In this case I was inspired by Pradier's gorgeous marble sculpture in the Louvre but I changed the arm and head positions. The fun part for me is that I started with an abstract painting and covered over everything except the area of the dresses. So the somewhat realistic faces contrast with the flat abstract pattern below.

This one was an experiment with color so it was difficult to photograph. The background is more of a lavender color. There are a lot of colors in the face and I'm going to keep making these small portraits as practice.

This is a study I did recently from a model wearing a buttercup yellow shirt and head scarf. I loved painting her face and the folds of fabric in her shirt and scarf. Happily, I was able to abbreviate things a bit and not get stuck on all the details I saw.

I started out making a color wheel with oil paints - blobs of color in the order of a prism or rainbow. They seemed like flowers so I added an imagined woman's face behind them, as if she were wearing the floral colors. I love working in oil again.

Clearly I love Picasso and thought it would be fun to try painting in his style, or one of his many painting explorations that with time were described as a style. At first I painted the flowers somewhat realistically. But looking it a few months later, I decided to paint them abstractly to give the garden a sense of color and exuberant growth. I think this contrasts nicely with her mood of stillness and reflection.

All the layers are acrylic but I used colored pencil on the top to model this figure. The surface of the painting is lively because of all the cross-hatched pencil strokes of color. I like the sense of calm and privacy. I also like the slight confusion about who is inside. Is it the bird or the woman? I think of the roses as wallpaper, but they could be real and outside on a trellis.

I have no idea how she ended up out West, but the diagonal line of red with black seemed like a tent flap.  So why the iron railing from a balcony in Provence? Maybe it's reminding her of that day she foolishly gave up a modeling gig for Matisse.
