At first I painted the flowers somewhat realistically. But looking it a few months later, I decided to paint them abstractly to give the garden a sense of color and exuberant growth. I think this contrasts nicely with her mood of stillness and reflection.

All the layers are acrylic but I used colored pencil on the top to model this figure. The surface of the painting is lively because of all the cross-hatched pencil strokes of color. I like the sense of calm and privacy. I also like the slight confusion about who is inside. Is it the bird or the woman? I think of the roses as wallpaper, but they could be real and outside on a trellis.

I have no idea how she ended up out West, but the diagonal line of red with black seemed like a tent flap.  So why the iron railing from a balcony in Provence? Maybe it's reminding her of that day she foolishly gave up a modeling gig for Matisse.

This is the larger version of a study. By increasing the size from 11x14 TO 30x40, the painting completely changed. This one has lots of texture in the ground and paint layers and differs slightly from the original in color and design. I love painting this big!
